Management 809: Private Equity in Emerging Markets

Bio:

Summary: Dr. Leeds is a Professor at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University, and the Director of the School’s Center for International Business and Public Policy. His expertise focuses on international financial markets, private equity investing in emerging markets, corporate governance and financial market reform. During a 30 year career in the public and private sectors, as well as academia, Prof. Leeds has worked as an investment banker and private equity investor structuring and valuing a range of cross-border transactions in emerging markets; as a policy advisor to governments on privatization, financial market reform, and direct foreign investment promotion; and as an academic, teaching and writing on subjects pertaining to international financial markets, private equity in emerging markets, and corporate governance. Prof. Leeds has worked in more than 100 countries in Asia, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Latin America, and Africa, and has written more than 30 articles and a book on private equity investing in developing countries.

Johns Hopkins University: His teaching at SAIS focuses on global financial markets, private equity in emerging markets, structuring and valuing of cross border transactions, and public policy issues that influence financial sector performance. The Center that he heads conducts applied research, and outreach activities that concentrate on the nexus between international business, finance and public policy formulation, particularly in emerging markets. His current research focuses on private equity investing in emerging markets and corporate governance.

Investment Banking: Previously Dr. Leeds was a Managing Director of Patricof & Co., a New York-based venture capital firm and merchant bank. He was co-head of the emerging markets practice, advising both Western companies seeking acquisitions in emerging markets and firms in developing country seeking private equity financing. Previously, he was a Partner at KPMG in charge of the firm’s global privatization advisory services that provided advisory services to companies and governments in emerging markets worldwide that were involved in privatization and financial sector reform. He worked extensively in the republics of the former Soviet Union and most of the Eastern Europe countries during the period when they were undergoing the transition to a market-based economy. Earlier in his career, he was a Director on the International Sales desk of Salomon Brothers in New York.

International Finance Corporation: Dr. Leeds spent ten years with IFC (World Bank affiliate), where he led many financial advisory and privatization assignments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and Southeast Asia. Over the years he participated in the preparation of dozens of debt and equity financings covering a broad range of industries.

Academia: Throughout his career in the private and public sectors, Dr. Leeds retained strong academic ties. During a two-year leave from IFC, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University. In addition to SAIS, he currently teaches a private equity course at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and has taught at Harvard. He has published extensively in his field, and frequently is invited to speak at universities and conferences on issues pertaining to private equity investing, global financial markets, financial policy reform, and a range of other current international finance and economic topics.
